Britain has committed itself to the most ambitious greenhouse gas emissions cuts in the world.
Energy and Climate Minister Ed Miliband says the Government is raising its target from a 60 per cent cut to 80 per cent by the year 2050.
Mr Miliband says the global financial crisis should not be used as a justification to shelve climate change initiatives.
"In tough economic times, some people will ask whether we should retreat from our climate change objectives," he said.
"In our view, it would be quite wrong to row back.
"And those who say we should, misunderstand the relationship between the economic and the environmental tasks we face."
